Nothing to Fear

“Are you scared?” asked Seyloq, holding the pipe out before him, indicating he was ready for Jor Alesh to begin.

“Yes,” she admitted. She could feel her pulse racing within her. It made her dizzy. Her sense of anticipation was far beyond anything she had ever felt when waiting for the Azara drink to take effect. Though she had not yet tried Seyloq’s toad medicine, she already knew that nothing she had previously experienced could have prepared her for this moment. She felt as though she were sitting with her executioner.

“Good,” said Seyloq. “You will soon find that there is nothing to be frightened of, but it is good to be honest with yourself, and to recognize that this medicine is a monumental, and potentially life-altering, experience. Though there is never a need to be overly serious, it should be taken seriously. This is not just some prayer meeting - this is infinity.”

“I don’t even know what that means,” said Jor Alesh.

“Of course you don’t,” responded Seyloq. “But you will.”

He held the pipe out for her, indicating with his eyes and body language that it was time. “Take your hits, and let go,” he said. She glanced at Jendru. He nodded, seeming to say that she could trust Seyloq, trust this medicine. She put her lips on the pipe as Seyloq held up the flame. She pulled it into her. She could hear the medicine sizzle as it melted into the bowl, a sweet, almost floral taste overtaking her. She knew right away that she liked this, maybe even loved it.

Things were already happening by the time Seyloq had taken his first hit and brought the pipe back to Jor Alesh for her second. There was no doubt that the energy was rising and everything was expanding. Even then, she could tell that she needed, no, wanted, more. As strong as the feeling fovertaking her was, it wasn’t enough. If she wanted, she could still fight against this, still hold on. The promise of infinity called to her. She put her lips to the pipe and took another, larger drag. Suddenly, there was no question. This is it . . .

From her ego’s perspective, it seemed clear that she was dying. Absolutely everything was dissolving into pure, white light, refracted into fractal rainbows that stretched and vibrated across the universe. Her entire life and all her relationships flashed through her mind. She knew she was letting it all go. She could feel her body falling back as her awareness of her surroundings was breaking apart, along with everything else. Her mind couldn’t hold on to anything, couldn’t possibly make sense of what she was experiencing. This is it . . . I’m dying . . .

And she knew that she was okay with this fact. She was dying, and she was ready and willing. Everything she had ever thought, ever believed, ever related to was simply falling away, dissolving into infinite light, infinite patterns of energy. It was so
